As a retail store owner, you know that your displays can certainly help make sales. They also help to brand your image, lure in customers and advertise new merchandise or promotions. Follow these simple rules to ensure that your retail displays are as effective and dynamic as they should be.

1) Make sure that your display has the proper lighting.

Marketing research has proven that spotlighting is most effective at getting customer’s to notice a display. Spotlighting does not necessarily mean harsh lighting, so be subtle. A strobe light might attract a lot of attention, but it will instantly turn away most customers.

2) Rearrange your displays often.

A lot of your potential customers will pass your store often. What got them to stop one day might be different that what got them to stop another day. Changing it up often will hold their interest and showcase more merchandise so that they can see that you really do have something to offer them.

3) Keep your store in line with the theme of the display.

Your store should reflect what you are advertising in your display. For example, if you have a mannequin in a bikini hanging out with mannequins in scuba gear, I would expect that you sold both in your store. If you don’t sell scuba gear, then don’t put it in the window.

4) Make sure that your window displays attract the right customers.

If you only want high-end customers, don’t use big “sale” signage in your window. You’ll only attract the bargain hunters that aren’t likely to spend money in your store. In turn, you’ll push away the bigger spenders that don’t want to push through a bunch of rummaging customers to buy high end clothes.

5) The display speed should be matched by the customer’s speed.

If your customers pass your window display in a car, it needs to be simple enough that they can decipher your message quickly. Simple mannequins wearing your clothing may be enough. But, if you are in an outdoor mall where customers leisurely stroll by, you could put in more detail to entice them to stop and take a look.

6) The display should be relevant to the buyer, right now.

This seems obvious, but many retailers make the mistake of advertising Christmas too soon; or bringing out the winter clothing in July. Most people do not buy their clothing so far in advance. Advertise “back to school” clothes when most people are buying them. You’ll make a lot more sales and customers won’t view you as ridiculously desperate to get the good sales season started.

7) Display your clothing on a mannequin.

Use mannequins to your advantage by displaying your clothes as they look when they are worn. Customers don’t have to rummage through crowded racks or make multiple trips to the dressing room to determine if they will like how something looks when it is worn.

Remember, in this case it is definitely better to have too many than not enough!

If you are following a tight budget, you may want to think about giving one favor to each couple rather than to each guest. This will lower the number needed and allow you to have more money to spend on other things. If you do decide to give one per couple, you should put the favor between the seats of the couple. Also, place a card with both their names on it. That way they will easily and quickly realize that it is meant to be shared. It is also a smart idea to buy favors that have a “couples” theme. For example you can give a nice photo frame that has space for two photos. If you decide to go with this plan, you need to remember that children, single adults, and guests without a date will each receive these favors. So make sure you think it through before deciding what to offer.

Another neat idea is to incorporate the favors into the overall theme of your reception. In the center, you can have a fancy display with all the favors on a table. You can put the favors in gorgeous baskets and decorate the display elaborately. Then simply place a note on the display to let each guest know that they can help themselves to a favor.

Or what about making them a parting gift? You can place the favors on a table near the exit. Just put a note that thanks your guests and asks them to take a favor hone with them. This way they do not have a chance of losing or possibly forgetting them when they’re ready to leave. But keep in mind, with this idea your favor will not be used during the ceremony or the reception. It will be used as a memorable take home keepsake.

There are many traditions and etiquette rules for a wedding ceremony and reception. In the end though, the wedding ultimately belongs to you and your groom. So whatever item you choose and whichever path you take, it should be what is right for you. After all it is your day!

For the past fifteen years, I have served as a principal, a manager, a transactional advisor, a legal advisor and a financial advisor to privately held businesses and their owners. Over this time period, I have noticed a lack of consistency in how Exit Strategy services are delivered to business owners. This inconsistency exists, even though succeeding a business is one of the most important and complex financial decisions that will be made in that business owner’s lifetime. Proper planning and well timed exits can literally mean millions of dollars in additional Value and Wealth Preservation that is added to a business owner’s net worth and legacy.

Therefore, it is imperative to inform business owners and their advisors of recent developments in – and to provide timely information on – this increasingly important practice area. Few business owners or advisors today focus on developing multi-year ‘planned’ exits from a business. For millions of business owners who are looking to retire or move onto a new phase of life, their exits often times lack the planning that may help ensure achieving that business owner’s personal goals.

Advisors to privately held businesses play a critical role in this Exit Strategies process. Privately held businesses have limited resources. Sometimes there is a lack of capital because the seed money is mostly founder dollars, i.e. personal net worth. Sometimes resources are limited within labor or human resources, i.e. ‘management’, because small businesses have a hard time consistently recruiting and rewarding highly skilled and talented employees. As a result, the typical entrepreneur fills many roles in the business and wears many hats. Often, most of that owner-operators’ time is allocated to ‘tactical’ items rather than ’strategic’ objectives. This business owner relies on advisors for ’strategic’ planning. Today, there is a lack of focus on Exit Strategies. Although this type of planning is growing in importance, it does not fit perfectly within any one of the ‘traditional’ advisory roles, i.e. legal, accounting, financial, insurance, etc. . . . To fill this void, business owners and their advisors require Exit Strategy expertise in designing and executing Exit Strategies, regardless of which discipline is initially presenting the idea. Exit Strategies planning includes a holistic and comprehensive review of the business owner’s corporate, personal, and family objectives. Generally speaking, the advisor who approaches the business owner as a ’solutions provider’ instead of as a ‘product provider’ will likely spear-head this endeavor.

It’s imperative to continue to raise the awareness to the myriad options available to business owners for exiting their businesses. Business owners can consider ‘internal’ exits to employees, family, or co-owners as well as ‘external’ or ‘third party’ exits to Private Equity Groups, Strategic Buyers, or through the Initial Public Offering (IPO) route. Each exit strategy takes a long time to execute because there is ‘no ready market’ for the transfer of privately held business interests. Further complicating this practice area is the fact that each privately held business is unique. Therefore, a description and/or valuation of each business requires time to assemble. Referencing my earlier comments about a ‘lack of resources’ amongst small businesses, I highlight the fact that it is often the business owners themselves who needs to compile the information required for these reports – in addition to continuing to operate their businesses. Exit Strategies are hard to design and even harder to execute. One of the best ways to overcome the obstacles inherent in these deals is plain old persistence because a pro-active approach to an Exit Strategy is the only approach to a successful Exit Strategy.

Normal amortization describes the process where at the beginning of your loan most of your payment is applied to interest and very little of the payment is applied to loan principal. Using a mortgage of this type, you will owe more for your home at the end of the month than you did at the beginning of the month.
There are certain situations where having a negatively amortizing mortgage could make financial sense. If you were to lose you job or have an unforeseen financial emergency a negative amortization option on your mortgage could ease your cash flow situation. This should only be used as a short-term solution as it will cost you a great deal more down the road. Negative amortization mortgages can also be utilized by real estate investors looking to quickly flip a property while keeping their monthly mortgage payments as low as possible. Use these loans with caution, as negatively amortized mortgages are a sinking ship that will take your finances down with it.
